The architect davioude was responsible for the planning of place saint-michel. A place refers to a public gathering space. Davioude was a chief architect for the city and worked for haussmann. He was in charge of promenade et plantation, meaning waling spaces, gardening and street furniture (street lights, benches, etc). He designed and set out where things should go. All trees, benches and the way they were arranged was kept consistent throughout paris. He would hire the sculptors who did the actual carving. The archangel, dragons and virtues were worked in metal by jacquemart.
