Document Summary

Genetic engineering- manipulation of dna sequences in organisms. Techniques used to engineer genes are called recombinant dna technology. Goals of genetic engineering are to improve understanding of how genes work and to advance biotechnology (manipulation of organisms to create products or cure diseases) Using recombinant dna techniques to manufacture proteins: the effort to cure. Pituitary dwar sm results from lack of production of growth hormone, encoded by gh1 gene. Pituitary dwar sm type i is autosomal recessive. Humans affected by pituitary dwar sm grow slowly, reach max. adult heigh of 4 feet. Early trials showed that people with pituitary dwar sm could be treated successfully with growth hormone therapy, only if it came from humans. Growth hormone puri ed from pituitary glands of cadavers is scarce and expensive. Treatment with growth hormone from cadavers is banned due to possible contamination with prions. Using recombinant dna technology to produce a safe supply of growth hormone.
