Why should males contribute to offspring: societal reputation: don"t want the reputation of a deadbeat dad, men put effort into mate"s child to impress them and get lucky. Since human children take so long to mature, a grandmother can care for her grandchild rather than having another kid. Ecology vs. environmentalism: ecologists are not necessarily environmentalists, ecologists should be descriptive, not normative. Ecology: the study of factors determining the distribution and abundance of organisms: ecology could be split into hierarchal levels: organismal, Interactions between individuals and their environment: mainly includes behavior but also includes physiology ie. salmons migrate from saltwater to freshwater environments. Population: a group of individuals of the same species. Interactions among individuals ie. only a few salmon survive to adulthood and on average only 2 will return to their stream of birth. Interactions among different species ie. salmon are prey as well as predators.
