Candiduria is a nosocomial urinary tract infection (uti) caused by the human pathogen candida albicans in immunocompromised patients and patients with indwelling urinary catheters. Limitations of antifungal drugs result in high cost of care, morbidity and mortality from c. albicans. The work by rane et al. (2013) sought to investigate the impact of a-type proanthocyanidins (pac"s) from cranberry juice to prevent biofilm formation of c. albicans in artificial urine (au). Pac extract was incubated with c. albicans in au, then it will prevent biofilm formation. This hypothesis was based on studies showing prevention of escherichia coli uti"s by cranberry juice. The main conclusion found from the paper was that cranberry pac"s reduce biofilm formation of c. albicans in au.
