It is important to protect public service broadcasting (ex. Aird commission: how would the sector operate, concern that in the absence of anyone policing this sector the american sectors would take over, early content on radio was mainly ads. Felt there was too much ads, too many stations in large communities, not enough in small ones. Saw signs of americanization everywhere: argued that broadcasting was a public service used to benefit all canadians, result: crbc, birth of cbc. Massey levesque: broadcasting, publishing, libraries, museums, anything that falls under culture. Importance love of high culture: definition of culture, ational concern that federal gov should be managing, gonna lead to loss of canadian identity, canadians overwhelmed with american culture. Fear of americanizaton: notion that audience is not jus corporate (not just for money), audience is made up of citizens. Regulation: crtc doesn"t have direct control over broadcasters, outlines certain ways to protect rights, threat of americanization.
