Communication is about being able to understand. Know who you"re talking to to have effective communication. Curiosity is basis to effective communication because you want to know more. Good communicators can help sell products you don"t even know you wanted (oprah) Audience trusts people while they are communicating. Want to communicate w people who have ability to hold counter thoughts. Horizontality means we think across the ideas. Communication characteristics: between people, prolongs lives, identifies us, tells others, practical. Identifies us: gives us a name and story. Tells others: we can spread what we are doing to others from anywhere. Practical: important key to effectiveness in a variety of everyday settings (signs) Models: linear model- sender to receiver, sender encodes it, no feedback, transactional- fluid, continually changing, relational not individual, always sending and receiving, get feedback (medium is the message) Cognitive complexity (ability to construct problems solvers)
