Other problems: fewer teachers specialize, school year- shorter, sat scores- below 1970 levels, overcrowding, high school drop out rates, differential access to quality schools, disparities in funding of suburban versus inner city schools. Recent studies, 2012: 9-13 year olds scored higher in reading and math than those in the 1970s, 17 year olds showed no significant improvements, few gains since 2008. Improvement by african american and hispanic students: narrowing (2012 data, white female students scored higher in reading than male in all groups, higher dropout rates for non-whites.
