Recent studies, 2012: 9-13 year olds scored higher in reading and math than those in the 1970s, 17 year olds showed no significant improvements, few gains since 2008. Improvement by african american and hispanic students: narrowing (2012 data, white female students scored higher in reading than male in all groups, higher dropout rates for non-whites.
