It cannot be boiled down to one reading. When he takes the draught/ drug it can be read that hyde is a part of jekyll. Previous class: jekyll and hyde as possible indictment of hypocritical, duplicitous structures of class (professional) and gender. This week we will take up critical lenses that allow for a more compassionate reading of jekyll- hyde as stigmatized, criminalizable lover of other men and as mentally afflicted addict. Multiplicity encoded in the formal properties of the narrative: fragmented text, embedded narratives. The figure of hyde is endowed in the character of hyde. Hyde as a smaller and criminalized/monster character is used to show that evil will not prevail. Hyde as the id socially unacceptable, goes against the gentleman code.
