Mid to late victorian shifts in relation to gender. Women could get divorces but only if they had witnesses for rape, abuse, etc. (cid:498)the new woman(cid:499) (cid:498)not(cid:499) a woman(cid:524) Colleges for women were being opened and a few male only colleges allowed women to study at their college. These fears are social fears because the woman is breaking out of her box. Even at the end of the century men thought that women who studied were wrecking their reproduction ability. Playwrights, painters, etc. are beginning to draw on (cid:498)the new woman(cid:499) and show. Sceptical of victorian moral energy, intense intellectual earnestness, and belief in objectivity. Interested in multiple sites and sources of vitality: the everyday, the sensory, the impermanent, and the experiential. Gagnier was interested in subjectivity in relationship to a very vast teeming world. He was dedicated to a kind of moral earnestness it is innate and grounds.
