GEOG 1HB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Walmart, Distance Decay
Document Summary
Connecting the concepts of location & distance. Spatial interaction: the level of movement or communication between two locations. E. g. how much interaction between head office & factories. Distance decay: interaction between locations diminishes in intensity and frequency as distance increases (as distance increases, interaction decreases) Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things . Things closer together are more likely to interact. Distance decay: the decline of an activity or function with increasing distance. Friction of distance: the inhibiting (limiting) effect of distance on interaction. Effect on our behaviour due to time or cost. The greater the friction the more pain in the ass. E. g of shopping, more likely to go if it"s closer-> Accessibility and connectivity: critical for the nature and level of spatial interaction. Accessibility: the ease with which distance can be crossed. The easier the less friction of distance, the harder the more friction of distance.
