Conquistadors- crosby and diamond would argue they took biological material to the new world that let them conquer. Spain (castile and aragon) were consolidating their territory on iberian. Castile- aggressive, centralized state vs aragon- dece(cid:374)t(cid:396)alized, 2 fo(cid:396)(cid:373)s of go(cid:448)"t. Indicative of confusion/diversity of hapsburg empire: traditions of distinct culture, language, laws, etc continues in present day. Spain: opposes definition of empires- made up of composite populations, netherlands will cause many problems for hapsburgs. In contrast, ottomans were successful overall in centralizing the empire, tighter lines of communications. Hapsburg- had to leave in place certain degrees of independence to their provinces bc they gained primarily thorough marriages. Wealthy cities and provinces of hapsburg empire had independence- caused issues. Charles v- bankrupted his empire 3 times, had to borrow money from city bankers (in italy) Consolidating power in new world- getting control from the conquistadors, gained money.
