Dutch advantages: location, engrossing, low cost shipping, high productivity farming, the dutch state, warehousing, religious and patriotic zeal backing enterprise, artisan industries, toleration and refugees. English were trading into the mediterranean, also had a trading post in moscow. Demand for grain in western europe got the polish to exploit peasant labour for grain export. Asia and africa: existing empires proved very resilient. Europeans thrust a world of trade and credit which interlinked all areas of the globe. 1600- early 1700"s the main city was amsterdam. Amsterdam was taken over by london which became the last nerve center for a dominating economic force. Dutch pioneered capitalism; variety of ways of mobilizing capital. Part of the reason for success was that it was a successful empire that came from the defeat of the hapsburgs.
