Challenged the roman catholic church (1st to successfully challenge rcc"s authority) Opposed the church"s sale of indulgences (pay to get a free way to heaven) Believed that indulgences were signs of greed, hypocrisy, and moral rot in the rcc. No human being had the power to absolve individuals of their sins, and grant them admissions to heaven. Denounced the sale of indulgences in a document called the 95-theses. (see below) Paying money to the church and getting a free way to heaven in exchange. The rcc believed that the indulgences encouraged individuals to reflect on their behavior while also bringing money to the church.
