Understand the concept of slavery in north america, enslaved women"s experiences, and women"s role in abolitionism. However, canada also has a history of racism. Slavery existed in north america prior to the arrival of europeans. Some indigenous peoples enslaved prisoners of war. Arrival of european brought a new type of enslavement: slaves considered less as human beings, more as property, slavery viewed in racial terms, racial distinctions were a new concept. In the classical world, slavery wasn"t necessarily a permanent condition. By the time europeans began settling in north america, slavery was justified by ideas of race, otherness, and inferiority. Not as significant to the social, economic, and political life of the colony of new france as it was to the american colonies. Lives of those enslaved peoples could be just as difficult. Portuguese & spanish were credited with starting the atlantic slave trade in the americas. 1619 approximately 20 captive africans sold into slavery at jamestown, virginia.
