85% of disney films refer to mental illness. Influences popular public attitudes, more so than contact with people with mental illness. With exception of negative stereotypes, people with mental illness usually absent: facilitate exclusion from society as if the(cid:455) don"t e(cid:454)ist. Portrays tend to appear as negative tropes. Mental illness is frequently depicted in mass media, and portrayals are often inaccurate. Dangerous and violent: on tv, 1 in 4 mentally ill individuals murder, 50% commit violent acts, reality: far more often victims than perpetrators of violent crime. Unpredictable: people as chemically imbalanced, ready to fly off hinge at any moment. Idiotic: people conflate mental disorder with intellectual impairment. Media misrepresentations and misuse has let to popular misunderstandings of terms: psychotic = violent, schizophrenia = split personality, mania = manic. Media dominated by notion of chemical imbalance as the cause of depression.
