Inductive reasoning information is gathered to test theory. Grounded theory - a type of qualitative research. Theory is grounded in the data - the theory comes out of the data. There is one method that is neither inductive nor deductive. ***see slide on elements to consider in research design for purpose statement assignment. When doing explanatory research - to find a causal relationships - there are various things to consider. Eg. going to the grocery at 10am and ask everyone to complete a couple questions on what they watched on tv the night before. Qualitative research is usually in this form but it can take place over a long period of time like 6 months. Many waves of research - revisiting subjects or situations unlike cross-sectional that has one wave. Time series or trend studies - applying the same questions or study to a group in one year and then again to another group in another year to compare results.
