HLTHAGE 2A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Ethnography, Antipositivism
Document Summary
Researcher learns about changes in the body and social situation with aging. Acceptance and awareness of death structure lives - not only thinking of death but celebrating people"s lives. Through qualitative research we are exposed to how people feel about their lives on an emotional and sensory level. You learn the smells and sounds associated with particular groups (cultures, religions etc). Everyday practices are learnt as well as how rituals structure people"s lives. Structural circumstances change rituals - the group had to change the time of their new year"s" celebration to accommodate the band they use in their events. Individual personal history is learnt - the choices people made as their lives unfolded are learnt. Objects that are meaningful to the individuals are learnt - one senior"s sewing machine. Gender norms structured how the women"s lives developed in this film. Gender practices made some women"s lives meaningful - getting one"s hair done and sewing.
