HLTHAGE 2A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Ethnography, Content Analysis
Document Summary
1 hour of interview takes about 4-5 hours to transcribe. Laughter, sounds, grunts, time stamps, whether the convo was. Selective transcription - making decisions on what should be transcribed as one is listening to the interview. Noticing that the interviewee was getting off-track. Summarizing changes the meaning of what someone is saying as you are summarizing in a subjective lens of what is important or not, despite trying to write objectively. Flexible - can develop new research questions as discovery comes along. Good for pursuing a topic in depth to get rich and emotive information. Moments of reflection and pause add to meaning. Cost-effective - compared to other methods like surveying but you still have to pay a transcriber which can be costly given hours of interview material. Interviewee has control over what they will say and are not contrained so there is high validity.
