Optional wednesday events during class time: essay writing, exam review, etc. Key themes: madness -> mental illness, nowadays we think of it as disease or sickness. Are historical symptoms the same as historical diseases: how we see disorders change with time and place. Sina) treatment wards for the mad are found across the muslim world: some say its demons in the body, or that they learned it, that it"s biologically in the brain, biologically in the bodily humours. In europe, some cited spiritual basis for madness, others argued for imbalance of humours: e. g. dancing plague, gave them the evil eye, witches spell. Some witches and madmen (esp. dangerous) burnt at the stake, etc. Yet most just stayed with their families - did nothing.
