Late 1960s a period of protest against all forms of authority. For 200 years, on eof the primary responsibilities of psychiatry was hospitalization and treating ppl. The introduction to these new drugs meant people didn"t have to be hospitalized anymore. Traditional forms of authority: religion, gov"t, medical doctors all under attack. Nobody is pleased (or only a few are). After 200 years of asylum building, the patient population going way up. In this book, he put forward a particular argument: mental illness a socio-cultural construction of 18th c. enlightenment . Madness being transformed into mental illness (strange behaviour into something treated by physicians). Psychiatrists seeking own fortune, locking up unreasonables who didn"t fit into new social systems. In attempt to gain power & legitimacy, psychiatrists used this concept of mental illness to lock up people who behaved in deviant ways (who didn"t fit emerging ideas of normal behaviour ). Tied to new economic order (according to foucault).
