Thought they would be heroes when returned but concern over moral bre of vets and hippy movement prompted nixon to declare war. Increased power of fed drug agencies, severity of punishment, prison as deterrent. Scienti c explorations granted attention, funding leads to founding of nida. Always told just say no to drugs both republicans, but anti-drug message resonated by both democratics and republicans. Challenging this approach (harsh criminalization, funding for federal drug agencies) alternatives have been dif cult because message is cemented everywhere. Earlier, anslinger"s crackdown motivated by fears of negroes, hispanics, filipinos, and entertainers who played satanic music . 1980s: crack cocaine cheaper, quicker, more potent. Urban gangs (made up of above races) transformed distribution arm of drug trade, sparks substantial violence. Certain racialized individuals become connected distribution of drugs.
