Heart: location (mediastinum), base vs apex, major landmarks (svc, ivc, pulm. Location: mediastinum (portion in between the lungs: base of the heart = top, apex of the heart = bottom. Heart is located between 2 diff bone structures (the 4 sternebrae & vertebrae) This is why compressions work to move the blow flow through the body b/c were squeezing the heart between. 2 boney structures: posterior region: descending aorta (travels behind heart to torso), esophagus, lymph nodes, vagus, thoracic duct, superior regions: aortic arch, esophagus, trachea, surface features: anterior & posterior (atria, ventricles, great vessels, sulci) Sulci are grooves in which the coronary heart vessels reside to be protected: coronary sulcus- at the crown of the heart.
