HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Partial Pressure, Complete Blood Count, Bone Marrow
Document Summary
Describe the production and function of rbcs. Transportation: responsible for transporting o2, co2, nutrients, hormones, and removing heat & waste products. Protection: blood loss: clotting, disease: phagocytic white blood cells, antibodies, etc. Plasma makes up about 55% of whole blood. Plasma is over 90% water, but it also contains proteins, glucose, hormones, ions, metabolites. The primary proteins it contains (which give rise to blood osmotic pressure): albumin, fibrinogen and others such as coagulation factors. White layer in the middle is sometimes referred to as a buffy coat: representing white blood cells or leukocytes in blood. In case of infection or increase in white blood cell count, that buffy coat will be increased in size when blood is centro fused and components are separated.
