HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture 2: Cardiovascular Development
Document Summary
1h06b lecture 2- cardiovascular development: postnatal (adult) vs fetal circulation (where does vascular resistance differ and why?) In fetal circulation, resistance is higher on the right and lower on the left: changes in vascular resistance at birth (pulmonary vs systemic. Pulmonary: right side of the heart, important for the replenishment of oxygen in the blood at the lungs, and the removal of carbon dioxide. Systemic: left side of the heart, delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body tissues, removes waste products, carbon dioxide, and heat from those tissues. Deoxygenated blood will be replenish with oxygen at the lungs during the pulmonary system. There are two closed circuits, a separation of the left and right side of the heart. Left side is oxygen rich, right side is oxygen poor. The circulation in adult life operates in series. This means that the output of one circulation, is the input for the other.
