HTHSCI 1LL3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lipid Bilayer, Cell Membrane, Inner Membrane
Document Summary
Bacterial cells are prokaryotic and do not contain a nucleus or other membrane- Our cells are eukaryotic and contain many compartments bounded by bound organelles membranes. Our cells are different from bacterial cells: we use the differences between us in order to treat certain diseases. Target the differences in order to kill off the bacteria. All cells are enclosed by a plasma membrane, which is a lipid bilayer (2 layers with their polar groups facing the aqueous environment on either side: tails are stuck together, fluid mosaic. The membrane serves to restrict the entry of substances into the cell: makes sure that the inside of the cell is a controlled environment, makes sure things are kept in place/maintained. Important for things like contractions (sodium on the outside, potassium on the inside) There are proteins both embedded in the membrane and anchored to it.
