Document Summary

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage . This definition implies that the patient reports the experience. This may be difficult with some patients such as those who cannot verbalize their pain (are pre-verbal, are intubated, children, individuals with developmental delays) The patient is the only one who knows if they are in pain, and it is the responsibility of the health care provider to treat that pain. If we do not treat pain, this is a failure of therapy. The physical state of the patient: the more run down a patient is, the more severe the patient"s pain will be. The emotional state of the patient: informs their coping ability. This has a lot to do with the fact that individuals feel more in control and thus have an increased tolerance to pain. Autonomy and control improves both the patient"s physiological state and emotional state.
