HTHSCI 3BB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Water Intoxication, Extracellular Fluid, Hyponatremia
Document Summary
Water is not really a macro nutrient but it is something we need in the macro amounts because it is so important. Involved in chemical reactions such as hydrolysis and condensation. If you drink too much water and just keep drinking and drinking then you get water intoxication which results in hyponatremia and can die from this. With water intoxication, it is the speed that is more important so how fast you are drinking water. Blood is made up of about 90% water. Muscle is about 75% water (bone is 25%) We consist most of water which is why it is so important. Our body is made up of 62% water. The amount of water varies depending on body mass and lean muscle mass. Our lean muscle contains more water than our bone or adipocytes. We can"t store water which is why we have to drink it all the time. Sources of water intake include beverages, food, and metabolic water.
