At her first prenatal visit she is told that all is well but her iron store are low. She eats less than the recommended amount of calories she should be eating during pregnancy. Eat a balanced diet and not worry about the weight gain. If it is a balanced diet and within the recommendations then she should probably be fine. The fertilized egg is called a zygote; after implantation, from 2-8 weeks it is referred to as an embryo. Fetal development occurs from 9 weeks until birth, at about 40 weeks gestation. The blood of the fetus and mother do not mix but nutrients can be delivered and wastes removed by transfer through the placenta. The umbilical cord and placenta supplies all the nutrient and then removes the waste.
