1951 - there was a lot of amendments done to the indian act. Only race based piece of legislation in canada. Eventually no one would have indian status. A pathway for status indians becoming canadian. In order for a status indian to become fully civilized they must have contact with individual land rights and ownership. You would be given individual property if you relinquished your indian status and became a full canadian citizen. If a male did this, the wife and children would lose their status. May be done by choice or by force. 1869, traditional forms of indian government systems are (technically) abolished. With confederation in 1867 one of the first moves was to abolish indian government. Run by indian agents, hired by indian affairs to monitor reserves and the business going on. Six nations was last community to resist elected system and did not have one until 1924.
