Document Summary
1868: the building and managing of schools begins in nwt and manitoba. The influence of the wigwam is was stronger than the influence of the school. The chief thing to attend to in dealing with the less civilized or wholly barbarous tribes, was to separate the children from the parents. Children needed to be separated from their native influences. Indian act came into legislation in 1876, three years prior. Missionaries at the time interpreted specific treaty clauses about education that they would take the responsibilities specifically for education of the children. Also interpreted that the federal government should pay them to run the schools. Residential schools are christian focused and run by priests and nuns. If we lobby the government to fund this, we must make sure children attended . There were regulations about children with tb not being admitted, however hundreds of children were admitted indiscriminately to residential schools.
