Document Summary

Brain: cranial cavity is portion of skull that has the cranial case (back of skull) 4 main regions: most inferior region, connected to spinal cord: brainstem. Relay between spinal cord and cerebrum (where there"s a higher level of fn). Brings axons up towards brain and have synapses with other portions of brain. Could have signal go thru or not go thru (decision making) Mostly highways for travelling action potentials from one part of body to another. Mostly white matter (sending signals from one place to another) Some grey matter regions (where we have a synapse decision points!) Reflexes necessary for survival respiration, cardiovascular control, digestion control. Projection off back of brainstem, like a mini-cerebrum. Weighs 10% of mass of whole brain, but contains 50% of the neurons! Constantly receiving sensory info from internal and external envmt and making adjustment s to our movements. Fine-tuning movements: diencephalon: sits on top of brainstem, like a cap, small and deep into brain.
