Document Summary

C shape cartilage rings keep the trachea open/stable. Cartilage changes as we move through the branch levels. After the first branch it divides approximately 16-18 divisions. Bottom portion of lungs called the base - sits on top of diaphragm. Terminal bronchiole lined with smooth muscle - can change the diameter to allow more or less air. Blood supply that goes to the bronchioles called the bronchiole artery and veins. Provides blood supply to tissues around these airways. They contain alveoli - this comes in contact with pulmonary capillaries for gas exchange to occur. Areas where more alveoli are there - this lines the alveolar ducts. Main gas exchange area is in alveolar sac - looks like a bunch of grape. Increases surface area for more gas exchange to occur. We want blood coming from the right side of the heart to the circulatory system via the pulmonary artery. The oxygenated blood then comes back through the branch of pulmonary veins.
