Canadian and northern us cities built artificial" ice rinks in 1890s. Indoor arenas originally designed for pleasure skating and speed skating, but hockey paid the bills: western pennsylvania (pittsburgh) Early pro hockey in canada: many top players banned from amateur leagues could only play professionally. Nha and pcha emerged as pre-eminent leagues in 1910s. Montreal wanderers were the first professional team to win in 1906. By 1915 it was an exclusively professional trophy: world series" of hockey, nha/nhl champion vs. pcha/wchl/whl champion. By 1927 it was an exclusively nhl trophy. Teams in vancouver, victoria, new westminster, seattle, portland. The league rather than the teams controlled the rights to the players: merged with wchl in 1924.
