Interventional Procedures - The Fundamentals
1.1.1 Defie ad state the purpose ad adatages of Iteretioal Iagig.
1.1.2 Differentiate the following terms: angiography, arteriography, venography, CT angiography, MR
angiography and Doppler ultrasound studies.
1.1.3 Identify the roles the above modalities play in the diagnosis and Interventional procedures
1.1.4 Describe the key factors to consider in assessing the patient history and identify high risk patient
categories.
1.1.5 Outline the criteria for an informed consent and identify any consent issues
1.1.6 Describe the pre-procedural physical assessment of the patient.
1.1.7 Describe a procedural pause.
1.1.8 Outline the dietary requirements before the procedure
1.1.9 Outline the post procedural care of the patient.
Itervetioal Iagig
What is it?
• Imaging procedures that intervene in a disease process, providing a therapeutic outcome.
• treatet of disease i additio to proidig diagosti iforatio
• Modalities:
o Fluoroscopy
o MRI
o Ultrasound
o CT
• Categories:
o non-vascular (ie biopsy)
o vascular
Purpose and Advantages
• Minimally invasive & lower risk: when compared to surgical procedure
• Less expensive: compared to surgical procedure/ hospital stay
• Shorter time as inpatient: recovery faster
• Alternative option: non-surgical candidates

• abscess removal surgery
•
• post angiographic procedure
Types of Interventional Procedures
• Vascular Interventional:
o Angiography (uses radiation): arteriography, venography, CT angiography, MR
angiography
o Doppler Ultrasound (used for guidance): detect whether blood is flowing towards
trasduer or aa fro it, a tell ho fast it’s goig

o Feduial: irle that gets plaed o eah side of pts’ head, oe o the frot ad ak,
image the whole volume of the head, used to guide the interventionalist towards the
patho, almost like a road map
• Non-Vascular Interventional:
o Biopsies: CT guidance, Fluoroscopy guidance, Stereotactic guidance (allows you to plan
in 3D), Ultrasound guidance, MRI guidance
o Drainages
Angiography
• Radiological study of the vessels with the use of contrast medium
• This is a general term for many types of studies
• left renal artery occluded
• Left main artery: blockage (not total occlusion,
stops blood flow to apex of heart)
