Understanding and Respecting Cultural Differences
“Although death is universal, dying is very much a culturally specific experience.”
If we truly want to provide optimal palliative care we need to understand and respect that
differences exist… educate ourselves, ask the patient/family specific questions.
What is a culture?
An umbrella term that includes values, beliefs, customs, rituals, practices and behaviors
Combination of material and non-material components of human society
Provides a sense of identity, belonging, experiential framework
Empowers individuals to work together in relatively cohesive social groups
oHumans have learned to adapt culture as a tool for survival
oEnables us to communicate with each other in meaningful ways
Examples of culture:
Gender identity
Urban/rural
Socio-economic status
Sexual identity and orientation
Religion
Age/generation
Culture and Health Care
determines how we distinguish health status from sickness
forms the patient experience
influences diagnosis
impacts all facets of the illness experience
