MUSIC 2F03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Joseph Carl Breil, William Axt, Photoplay
Document Summary
Three general approaches to music; originally composed, adaptations of classical music, arrangements of popular songs. Back in the day, they didn"t have movie theatres so you could watch them basically anywhere. However, in the early 20th century, we see the movie industry start to take place. We start to see places where movies are more likely to appear and be shown. Vaudeville is a variety live show that has singers, actors doing skits, comedians, dog shows, magic acts. During the intermissions of these vaudeville shows, they would begin to show short lms. Photoplays were what early movies we called. Unfortunately for vaudeville, this is the beginning of the end. Rapidly, the intermission movies become the best part of the show for the audience. Eventually vaudeville is driven out of business by movies. Vaudeville troops toured and had a music band that would travel with them. Typically 5 or 6 musicians, piano player, wind players, guitar player etc.
