Pathophysiology: history of cigarette smoking damage to alveolar gas exchange causing inflammation of the airways, bronchoconstriction and hyperresponsiveness. Presentation: shortness of breath; substernal, supraclavicular and intercostals indrawing, possible cyanosis, possible cognitive impairment. Risk factors: smoking/environmental exposure; history of copd, asthma, etc. Bronchodilators (e. g. beta 2 agonists; muscarinic antagonists) open airways.
