NURSING 2LA2 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Thyroiditis, Colloid, Globulin
Document Summary
Gland looks like butterfly, sitting on anterior aspect of larynx. They are sphereoid glands surrounded by cuboidal follicular. On the inside there is the matix (goo) called colloid which holds the thyroid hormone. Only endocrine gland which stores the hormone outside of the gland. Therefore is vital for survival, and in turn is highly vascularized. Also has many nerves run by it. Mental retardation can occur in fetal stage without thyroid. (basically it turns up everything in the body) Stimulates production of atpase synthesis and atp breakdown creates heat. Thyrotropin releasing hormone - from hypothalamus---> anterior pituitary---> thyroid stimulating hormone ---->thyroid------> tri-iodothyronine, tetra-iodothyronine or thyroxine (t3/t4) thyroid hormone. T3 most potent, t4 can be converted in gland to t3. 3 or 4 iodine molecules making the names. Low lvl of t3/4 in blood releases trh from hypothalamus----hypophyseal portal veins------->ant pituitary------>tsh------bbloodstream----->thyroid follicular cells------> t3/4 to blood----->they are lypophilic going into nucleus effecting the dna.
