Introduction to twelve cranial nerves and their functions. There are 12 cranial nerves associated with the brain. The first two attach to the forebrain and the remainder arise from the brain stem. All of the cranial nerves, except the vagus nerve, relate to only head and neck structure and function. Olfactory i: this sensory cranial nerve located in olfactory bulb of brain and has olfactory receptors for sense of smell. Optic nerve ii: this sensory cranial nerve leads from eyes to thalamus. It is responsible for sense of sight of retina. This nerve develops as a outgrowth of the brain, it is a brain tract. Oculomotor nerve iii: this motor nerve arise from midbrain and leads to 6 eye muscles (including eyelids and lens) and pupil. This nerve is associated with eye movement and pupil constriction. Trochlear nerve iv: pulley this motor nerve arises from midbrain and leads to eye muscles.
