Document Summary

Cross-sectional anatomy of the spinal cord: anterior median fissure separates anterior funiculi, posterior median sulcus divides posterior funiculi. White matter: pathway generalizations: pathways decussate, most consist of two or three neurons, most exhibit somatotopy (precise spatial relationships, pathways are paired (one on each side of the spinal cord or brain) Part of multineuron pathways (connect brain to body region) Contains ascending and descending pathways containing spinal cord neurons, peripheral and brain neurons. Decussation- crossing of pathways from one side of cns to other side. Relay- chains of neurons which contribute to the pathway. Somatotpy- precise spatial relationship - reflective of orderly mapping/ organization of tracts. Symmetry- all pathways and tracts are paired symmetrically. Conduct sensory impulses upwards to areas of the brain. First order neurons- can be found in a ganglion and conduct impulses from the cutaneous receptors of the skin and proprioceptors to the spinal cord or brain stem, where they meet with second order neurons.
