POLSCI 1G06 Lecture 2: Political Science Presentation
The Senate
The Canadian Parliament consists of two legislative powers which includes the
House of Commons and the Senate (Makarenko, 2007). According to Dr. Alway, the
Senate was established as a system to have a check on democracy (Lecture). On paper,
the Sentate is extremely powerful because without the approval of a Senate a bill cannot
become law (Always, Lecture). In addition, the Senate is appointed by the Governor
General through the Prime Minister to assure that there is a balance between elected
officials (House of Commons) and appointed officials (the Senate). The purpose of the
Sentate is to “slow things down and not allow popular power to take things over” in
Parliament (Alway, Lecture).
