Document Summary

Readings chapter 3 page 60 75. In the past, sustainable, peaceful democracy has usually been prefaced by violence, as the old power structures had to first be destroyed before a new one could take its place. The electoral process is structured in such a way that the people are far removed from government: how to manage the tension between the will of the majority and the rights of the minority. In canada the charter of rights and freedoms manages this tension. The most notable private sphere (arguably) relates to the economy and private property: most of our time is spent laboring under the control of others (employers) Employers are not subject to the democratic oversight of those that they employ. Especially in the so-called globalized world, there is a degree of interconnectedness between states/societies. As such, there is no longer an alignment between rule-makers and rule-takers.
