Thus we see high levels of international openness during the period of british. The extent of us power along 4 different axis (mann): economic power. But also in members only clubs like nato, g7, g20: us television, film, music, images. Scratching beneath the surface, however, reveals that us power may not be as unassailable as first thought. By certain measures the us is less powerful than the headline numbers would suggest. For example, ranking countries by purchasing power parity rather than by exchange rate gives china a gdp of close to trillion. Some have argued that china will present a substantial challenge to us economic hegemony in the near future. The american military may also be unsuitable for maintaining hegemony. Access to technology and portable weaponry means that guerillas and terrorists are better equipped than their predecessors. America"s ability to exercise political power internationally may be overstated.
