Lesson 10. 1: the prison industrial complex and its causes. Today, we"ll learn about the effects that the use of force and excessive levels of force in the criminal justice system and in our broader governance systems have on society. We"ll learn about the impacts that various attempts to control the population have. In short, we"re asking what the outcome of a more punitive based approach to criminal justice / governance is in our system. It"s likely the one, despite the recent events, that gets the least amount of attention from the media. When it does come up, it tends to be associated with certain events and tends to get sensationalized around things like prison riots, escapes, the release of dangerous offenders or individuals who committed dangerous or horrific crimes. More recently, we"ve seen the results associated with police brutality or prison guard brutality that seem to have gained some momentum.
