Socrates 369b human beings are not self-sufficient, without city"s we would only be surviving. To live a human life is not just to scrounge for the bare necessities, it"s a life lived well. We all have different natures, humans should specialize and share; pool resources. The most important thing for the city is not to make any one of us happy it is to pursue the common good. Politics for us as modern people is to make ourselves happy; enable us to do what we want. Plato wants us to see that politics and political associations are for the common good. Plato creates the city of pigs; only bare necessities of food and wine. Humans are not satisfied living like pigs. Our complex desires that make us what we are lead us to fight with one another. Basic thing a city needs; first thing; an army/guardians.
