All animal species communicate in some way. Language is special and unique to humans. Allows us to share details and emotions with others. Lots of animals communicate (birds perform dance to attract a mate: ex. dogs growl in order to communicate anger / fear / etc. How do we communicate with one another, why do we choose certain words. Communication can be seamless but what happens when you speak in different languages: lost in translation > ex. of crazy english in foreign countries (beware of safety) Crazy english by richard lederer (examples can be found on the powerpoint on avenue) If someone started speaking a random language, would you recognize it: even when creating a fake language, you need to have grammar (syntax and morphology, lexicon > meaningful description of the world. Dothraki > throaty, show elements of culture ( very horse based, have hard time talking of bodies of water)
