Accurate & comprehensive clinical diagnosis of a psychological disorder, or conceptualization of a psychological condition is important precursor to finding right treatment. Diagnosis informs of treatment options, but also has implications for the likelihood that an individual will seek out treatment - ask ourselves similar questions as the dr does when diagnosing, when assessing whether or not to seek help. Ego syntonic disorders: symptoms of disorder are seen by patient as valued or advantageous (eg. obsessive compulsive personality disorder) Ego dystonic disorders: symptoms are perceived by patient as undesirable, more likely to seek treatment (eg. ocd) Diagnosis doesn"t necessarily provide complete picture of individual"s treatment needs. Risk & protective factors can influence development & expression of mental health problems.
