Document Summary

Psych 1x03; research methods 1 and 2; c35; sept 15; dr. kim. *science and research dynamic processes therefore sometimes a paradigm shift occurs: a dramatic change in our way of thinking (ie: copernicus challenged the dogma that the earth was the center of the universe) Four basic principles of the scientific method: parsimony. When there are two equally good explanations/theories, scientists accept an explanation with the least amount of assumptions. Assume that a behaviour is a reflection of the same underlying mechanism in people all over the world (*happiness produces a smile; the cause must always have the same effect) Assumption that the same cause that produce effects in the lab = produce the same effects in real life: natural order, generalizability, conservatism. Support the same explanation until new facts accumulate that the current explanation cannot explain. Empiricism- knowledge should be based on actual observation and not reason alone.
