Issues in research on effects of media: limited by ethical constraints (random assignment to media) Can monitor the development of pre-existing groups but can"t make any causal claims; too many confounding factors. The goal of sesame street is to prepare children for school. Children from low-income families unprepared for elementary school; wanted to remedy that. 50% of american children were watching it regularly after the first year it aired. Significant, positive impact on cognitive development and school readiness, especially for low-income.
