Document Summary

Characteristics of stages: qualitative differences between stages, invariant order, universal, ages are approximate. What piaget did was study his three children intensively throughout their lives and especially during the sensorimotor stage. He did various experiments to determine this (experimental manipulation), but they were still naturalistic. His kids were quite unaffected by what he did. It was quite small: genetic similarity. Three children that are related to one another and to the people who are studying them: observer bias. Since he did his own work and published it, other people have been able to replicate this study as well. Children are learning how to solve problems at this age. They are learning what to do in the world that will get them results that they will want. For piaget the entire basis of intelligence is the reflex activity that we are born with. We go from reflex machines to thinking machines.
